Internship Opportunities in the Arts

 

This is a unique experience to apply collegiate studies while gaining professional experience. There may be volunteer intern opportunities available in several departments. Interns are assigned to departments based upon organizational needs and the interest of the intern.   

Internships at The Bushnell are designed to offer challenging and educational field experience related to an individual’s particular area of interest in arts and business administration.

Special emphasis is placed on offering interns “hands-on” experience which will provide a valuable perspective on the inner workings of a performing arts center in a successful business environment.  Every effort is made to design a special project of interest in a broad range of departments, including:

Intern assignments depend upon the qualifications and interest of the applicant, as well as the specific needs of each department at The Bushnell.  Department heads, managers and/or directors, who are involved in the design of the intern’s project, provide supervision.  Internship positions are available to students, as well as other qualified individuals.  Internship positions are voluntary (unpaid), with college credit available where applicable.  The scheduling of an internship is flexible, making possible part-time and summer positions, in addition to spring and fall semester positions.

            Program Objectives

  • Provide practical/hands-on experience to students in careers related to their field of study
  • Produce interns that are recognized in the community as competent and ready to work in career-related employment
  • Obtain feedback from students that can be used for the growth and development of the program

Internship Descriptions

 

Position Title:     Human Resources Intern

 

Reports to:     Human Resources Director

 

General Description:

The Human Resources Department oversees all responsibilities associated with The Bushnell employment including:

• Recruitment, selection and hiring

• Personnel policies and procedures

• Benefits, compensation and recognition programs

• Employee relations programs

• Employee training and development activities

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities/Projects:

  • HR projects may include HRIS maintenance, records, assist with training and development ground work, data analysis, filing, research projects, and occasional backup for receptionist. Other duties & assignments as required.
  • Review HR page on the Intranet to be sure pertainent information is posted.
  • Develop recruitment sources, i.e., setting up email list for college recruitment.
  • Provide assistant with a Needs Assessment Project including training materials: research videos, handbooks, and other materials
  • Assist in the development of orientation & re-orientation materials, videos, presentation (PowerPoint)
  • Assist in daily assignments and activities {records, draft correspondence and memos, resume searches, return phone calls, provide back up for receptionist, develop necessary Excel spreadsheets}

Position Title:     Facility Sales & Services

 

Reports to:     Facility Sales & Service Manager

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities/Projects:

•  Assist with duties related to special events and event planned.

• Support the functions of the special events and sales staff. 

• Duties will vary on a daily basis depending on the needs of the department.

Previous experience/ skills required:   

  • Computer knowledge of Windows 07 and PageMaker applications
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Creative

Position Title:     Marketing Intern

 

Reports to:     Associate Director, Marketing

 

General Description:

    The Bushnell's Marketing department directs and implements all aspects of institutional and show-related marketing and sales through a combination of advertising, public relations, communications and sales initiatives.

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities/Projects:

• Assist with research, copywriting, advertising, promotion, publicity and more. 

• Support the functions of the marketing communications, advertising and sales staff. 

• Duties will vary on a daily basis depending on the needs of the department.

Previous experience/ skills required:   

  • College student majoring in marketing, communications and/or some aspect of the performing arts

Position Title:     Development Intern

 

Reports to:    Development Manager  

 

General Description:

                      The Development department at The Bushnell raises money to support the operational, programming and educational costs of the institution through the solicitation of monetary gifts from corporations and individuals.

Position Duties and Responsibilities/Projects:

•  Work on any special projects that are currently happening in the department i.e. donor survey, research online giving opportunities

Position Title:     Education Department Intern

 

Reports to:     Education Department   Sr. Manager

 

General Description:

            The Education Department at The Bushnell focuses on enhancing student learning through the arts, and building community involvement both through the arts and performance events. The Bushnell's PARTNERS® program is highly regarded as a program of excellence and has received numerous local, regional and national awards.  A literacy-based program using multicultural literature and the arts as its foundation, PARTNERS® is currently working in several schools in the Greater Hartford area.  Teaching and performing artists are involved focusing on a wide variety of arts disciplines and unique curriculum units of study to enhance and bring to life student learning in the classroom.

            An internship within the Education Department during either the fall or spring semester could include actual teaching artist assistance directly in a classroom during the day or during extended day hours; material preparation for classroom units of study; administrative work within the Department; educational research; or project assignment to a number of new initiatives within the Department.  A summer internship may also include program preparation, research and administrative work within the department.

           In addition, the Education Department manages a vocal fellowship for high school students.  A spring internship could include preparation for the annual concert, including possibly helping to stage the event.  Also, The Bushnell maintains an extensive archive collection.  An internship involving the Archives would include cataloging, research and organizing materials.

Past Internship Project Assignments:

  • Research, develop, and design a matrix consisting of both Connecticut and State National Arts Standards to run in alignment with PARTNERS® units of study
  • Working with Bushnell Teaching Artist, prepare materials for a number of visual arts units of study (i.e. mask-making, Japanese fish kites, "Living Waters" micro-organism project, Ancient Egyptian mural project)
  • Act as Teaching Artist Assistant within the classroom providing assistance to Bushnell Teaching Artist and children/young adults attending a designated PARTNERS® School
  • Working with Educational Department Project Manager, coordinate program components for the Ensign-Darling Vocal Fellowship Program
  • Research Civil War topics and historical documents to enhance recently created middle school interdisciplinary unit revolving around English, Social Studies and the Arts

 

Previous experience/ skills required (based on specific projects assigned):   

  • Strong interest in working with children and/or young adults (middle school students) in a classroom setting
  • An interest and ability in the arts and creativity
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Flexibility
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to work with a team as well as independently
  • Computer knowledge – Word, Excel, graphic ability

Position Title:     Programs Intern

 

Reports to:     Director of Programs

 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent analytical and interpretational data skills
  • Professional Oral Communication Skills
  • Computer (Microsoft Excel, Office, and Internet) experience required
  • Completion of 2 years college undergraduate course work
  • Minimum of 10 hours/week for a 3 month period

 

General Description:   

     The Programs Department is responsible for:

  • booking theatrical and non-theatrical shows for The Bushnell presentation in both Mortensen theatre and Belding theatre
  • manage rentals of all theatres including local arts organizations such as the Hartford Symphony Orchestra
  • create community arts events, including but not limited to Master Classes or Workshops, pre-show lectures, and Family Open House Day

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities/Projects:

     Creating and maintaining Excel documents, records, assisting with data analysis, filing, research projects. Other duties & assignments as required.

Position Title:     Front of House Intern

 

Reports to:     Front of House Manager 

 

General Description:

     Front of House Management includes serving as the liason between The Bushnell and presenting shows/organizations in order to provide show related information to Assistant House Managers, collaborating with the Volunteer Manager to ensure proper communication with all FOH volunteers regarding policies and procedures, supervising all FOH part-time staff, maintaining building emergency/evacuation procedures , and serving as the on-site customer service manager.

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities/Projects:

  • Maintain and update volunteer Front of House assignment sheets
  • Maintain and update emergency / evacuation procedures and contact information
  • Assist in the completion of Show Briefings and Information packets for FOH staff
  • Assist in scheduling for FOH staff
  • Assist with show file organization
  • Assist during Performances with show related duties
  • Assist with patron feedback and Incident Database management

Previous experience/ skills required:   

  • Computer knowledge:  Word, Excel, Access
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Outgoing / Personable / Great Attitude
