Scenes from the Bushnell

The Emperor dresses The Bushnell stage

The Emperor's New Clothes, a timeless tale adapted from Hans Christian Anderson, brings a delightful introduction to opera to The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts' Mortensen Hall Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 10:30am as part of the 2003-2004 Bushnell Children's Theatre (BCT) season. BCT, sponsored by People's Bank, includes presentations that are filled with humor, heroes, and history, and are connected directly to areas of study in the classroom. For group and school pricing, please call (860) 987-6010. Individual tickets may be purchased by calling The Bushnell Box Office at (860) 987-5900, or online at www.bushnell.org.

The story begins with Messienne, a gypsy, foretelling what strange and wondrous events will happen this night under the crescent moon. Soon, we meet Reyalto, daughter of Chernaud, the Emperor's councilor, who has prearranged her marriage to a foreign Duke twice her age. Chernaud has done this not only to secure a rich dowry for his daughter, but also to win favor with his liege, the vain Emperor, who will play a starring role in the marriage ceremony. Chernaud's plans for the desired wedding begin to unravel when Reyalto meets Simon, a tailor's apprentice who is on his way to present the Emperor with the most beautiful robe in the land. However, the vain Emperor rejects the robe when he realizes that the clumsy tailor has gotten it muddy. He throws Simon in jail and commands Chernaud to find a new tailor, one capable of creating the most significant and grand garments in the land. From here we reunite with the classic Anderson tale and-well, we won't bare it all.

This new opera for young audiences, with book and music by Ric Averill, offers a fun and humorous interpretation of the classic tale of romance, rebellion, and disguise. Containing arias, love duets, mystery and slapstick comedy, this show will prove to be an amusement for audiences of all ages.

The Emperor's New Clothes is presented by the Kennedy Center IMAGINATION CELEBRATION on tour.
