Teenager Amelia "Wickie" Martin has the important job of helping to tend a lighthouse in the border state of Delaware as the Civil War breaks out. Set on Fenwick Island in 1861, Wickie dreams of the day when she may be given a lighthouse of her own. For now, she assists her father in his duties and keeps watch each night with only her thoughts and diary for company. In addition to her duties at the lighthouse, she teaches school to children on the mainland where the threat of war is even more prevalent. The children are not immune to the political climate of the day and Wickie finds herself mediating their arguments while trying to come to terms with her own views on slavery, secession, and the imminent war.

Share Wickie's innermost thoughts and feelings as she struggles to determine her place in a crumbling world. As the nation deteriorates towards war, tensions flare in Wickie's family, pulling them apart. A Light in the Storm explores Wickie's coming of age in a time when nothing is constant and the future unknown.
