APRIL 4, 2002 HARTFORD, CT - Hartford's performing arts community will come together for the fourth time April 7-14, 2002 to pay tribute to the life and work of Ted Hershey, a principal dancer with Hartford Ballet and co-founder of WORKS contemporary dance who died of AIDS in 1998. The week of performances, workshops and discussions will celebrate his memory, the community he nurtured and the field of dance and music in Hartford. THE TRAINING MARATHON MASTER CLASSES Sunday, April 7, 9:30am-2:00pm at Hartford Stage's Rehearsal Studios at the Richardson Building, 942 Main Street, Hartford Yoga Class 9:30am-10:45am Visceral/Modern 11:00am-12:15pm Limon/Modern 12:30 pm-1:45pm Tania Terry teaches yoga based on Kripalu yoga and Vispassana meditation and is the yoga teacher of the White Mountain Summer Dance Festival. Kristofer Storey is a former member of the Alvin Ailey, Donald Byrd and Mark Morris Dance Companies and now choreographer and teacher in his own right. Paul Dennis is a former member of Limon Dance Company and Works/Laura Glenn Dance.
THE ARTISTIC HUDDLE: A PANEL WITH PASTA AND PASTRIES Sunday, April 7, 2:00pm-4:00pm at the Autorino Great Hall, The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, 166 Capitol Avenue, Hartford Join panelists, master teachers and choreographers of the 4th Annual Marathon for pondering, pasta and pastries, in the new Autorino Great Hall at The Bushnell. The panel will focus on "The Arts in a Changing World" discussing the role of the artist and how art is impacted by world events and vice versa. Marathon creator, Laura Glenn, Ted Hershey's wife and partner in WORKS, will moderate the talk. Panelists include: Ron Compton, retired Aetna Chairman, community leader and photographer; John Carroll last seen in Hartford as a cast member of Fosse and currently company member of the David Parsons Company; Paul Dennis former Works performer, former member of the Limon Company and recently minister in St. Thomas who has just moved to Fairfield, CT; Christine Dixon-Smith, Artistic Director of Sankofa Kuumba Cultural Arts Consortium and Mitzi Yates, former General Manager of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts and currently the Principal and CEO of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC.

CHILDREN'S WORKSHOP Practicing Umoja Sunday, April 7, 3:00-4:00pm and Wednesday, April 10, 10:30-11:30am at Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street Practicing Umoja (Unity) presents participatory dances, songs, and rhythms of the Caribbean from their roots in the African motherland to the islands that became their home. From preschoolers to adults, the audience is invited to join in, first to learn the dance steps and then to perform them all together as one big dance company!
SPECIAL BUSHNELL PERFORMANCE Join a Community Open House for "String Break- Classical Music Springs to Life" Saturday, April 13, 10:00am-6:00pm Ted Hershey Marathon at 4:00pm at the Belding Theater, The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts Saturday April 13 is a community open house at The Bushnell with events that are free and open to the general public. The Ted Hershey Marathon is presenting composer Martin Hennessey performing original and repertory works with Works/Laura Glenn Dance. Included will be a world premiere. This year, the Marathon is part of String Break, a month long celebration of classical music and performance events being held at The Bushnell and other Greater Hartford venues.
